My name is Lily, I am currently in my third year studying Human Physiology at Cardiff University and I was diagnosed with DDH, developmental dysplasia of the hip, from birth - one of the luckier ones. My treatment was never simple and after 8 operations, months of traction, several braces and physiotherapy I was left with a fully functioning, hip aged 2 and a half, a little before the picture below.
I have never let my hip slow me down and even after spending a few weeks every couple of years on crutches, I have led a very active lifestyle, even reaching county level hockey. I have always set my sights on what I wanted to achieve and adapted everything to suit me, determination knows no limits. At the age of 20, my hip was on its last leg, literally, and I had a total hip replacement June 17th, 2015.
I have started my blog, in the hope that I can help other people in my shoes facing a hip replacement at 20, or even younger, and provide information on a practical level, plus help spread awareness.
For all of you on the initial DDH path, its a log journey, but one that is highly worth it and it does get easier! A hip replacement might sound scary when thinking of your little one, but this is just my story and every story is different! And for those of you already on your path, or in my position and awaiting a full hip replacement, good luck! And I hope my blog helps!
Please note, this blog is by no means a, 'self pity party', or a 'sob story', it has been created to help spread awareness and share my story or both DDH and having a THR. I would love for you too keep following my progress and hopefully this will help others!
Ps. While I want to become a doctor, I am not there yet, the medical/science information I include I have acquired form research or gained from my own experiences.
